The 2017 NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest reached its deadline last week and attracted several entries from Birmingham’s new musical talents and unknowns. The series features all genres of music from amateurs to professionals where artists like Adele, T-Pain, Wilco and Tinariwen have performed. This is the 3rd annual NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest. Both 2015 and 2016 drew nearly 7,000 entries each with “Lost in a Crowd,” by Fantastic Negrito, and “Someday We’ll Linger In The Sun,” by Gaelynn Lea winning, respectively.  The 2017 contest accepted entries from January 13 – January 29. The Judging period runs from January 30 – February 23, with the grand prize winner to be announced on February 28, 2017, at 10AM E.S.T. The grand prize wins a trip to perform live at NPR’s headquarters in Washington D.C. to be produce and distributed as part of the NPR Music Tiny Desk series. The Brook & The Bluff

independent, 2016

Birmingham natives Alec Bolton and Joseph Settine formed The Brook & The Bluff while attending Auburn University in the fall of 2014. The name of the group stems from each member’s home suburb in Birmingham, Mountain Brook and Bluff Park.

Originally an acoustic duo, the pair quickly became a staple at local venues, turning heads with clean vocals and expert guitar work. Still searching for the right musicians to create a full band, the duo released “The Rough Cuts,” a 3-song acoustic project, in the fall of 2015.

In the spring of 2016, John Canada expanded the group’s sound with percussion and an added voice. The trio instantly locked in and started playing together consistently. After resolving to make something of this ensemble, the trio searched for a bassist to fill the bill. Rip Britton completed The Brook & The Bluff in the summer of 2016.

Now fully equipped, The Brook & The Bluff is passionate about sharing their original music with Birmingham and beyond. The band is working on its first full project and excited about taking the next step in their musical progression.
