On October 4, Phoebe Bridgers brought her uber-popular Reunion Tour to Birmingham, serving as one of the smallest-capacity dates she’s played in 2021. After experiencing a monumental 2020 with the release of Punisher and her Grammy nominations, this year’s tour was the first time that listeners got to hear these powerful songs live. An opening set from local favorite Taylor Hollingsworth won the crowd over, with deep cuts from his discography and his rendition of his song “Dominoes” from Better Oblivion Community Center (the Bridgers/Conor Oberst collaboration from 2019) created an impressive opening environment for Bridgers to build off of. The setlist consisted primarily of hits from Punisher, with songs from her 2017 debut Stranger in the Alps sprinkled within. It was an intimate (but still packed — the place was sold out), stormy evening with an artist who’s quickly ascending, and hopefully she’ll return to Birmingham soon.

On September 8, Los Angeles-based folk-rock band Dawes came roaring through Birmingham to kick off their U.S. tour at Avondale Brewing Company. With this being their very first tour since the COVID-19 pandemic, the band was in energized form, tearing through highlights off of their entire discography including last year’s Good Luck with Whatever. One particular highlight was their performance of Passwords’s “Feed the Fire”, which turned into a nearly ten-minute-long jam session that was only the second song of the set. Lead singer Taylor Goldsmith sounded better than ever, seemingly rejuvenated after a long time off of the road. He and the band frequently mentioned how cool it was to kick the tour off in Birmingham, and the passionate crowd of fans seemingly agreed. Check out our photos of Dawes at Avondale Brewing Company below, and check out the rest of their tour dates here.

Galactic

GALACTIC

Galactic is a collaborative band with a unique format. It’s a stable quintet that plays together with high musicianship. They’ve been together so long they’re telepathic. But though the band hasn’t had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an instrumental group. Galactic is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with Mercurio and Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their albums, they do something that’s unusual in rock but not so controversial an idea in, say, hiphop: they create something that’s a little like a revue, a virtual show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental soloists each taking their turn on stage in the Galactic sound universe.
