Sublime with Rome

Sublime with Rome

Sublime with Rome Counts Their Blessings

By Rebecca Scott & Josh Matthews

While Sublime is forever cemented in music culture, Sublime with Rome is writing their own story with an already rich history and a future that is looking brighter than ever. We caught up with the band’s lead singer of twelve years, Rome Ramirez, while touring across the western US en-route to perform at Avondale Brewery on July 29.

Rome, you were only 18 years old when you became the catalyst for reuniting the most famous ska-punk band of all time. The story of how you became the frontman of Sublime is the stuff of rock n’ roll legend. How did this come to be?

I was living in Los Angeles, and I started recording with some musicians, and one of them was a girl who was working at a studio in Orange County. The owner of that studio was really good friends with the bass player of Sublime. I just met him by chance one day at that studio, and then I started… [read more…]

Galactic

Galactic

GALACTIC

Galactic is a collaborative band with a unique format. It’s a stable quintet that plays together with high musicianship. They’ve been together so long they’re telepathic. But though the band hasn’t had a lead singer for years, neither is it purely an instrumental group. Galactic is part of a diverse community of musicians, and in their own studio, with Mercurio and Ellman producing, they have the luxury of experimenting. So on their albums, they do something that’s unusual in rock but not so controversial an idea in, say, hiphop: they create something that’s a little like a revue, a virtual show featuring different vocalists (mostly from New Orleans) and instrumental soloists each taking their turn on stage in the Galactic sound universe.

The Brook and The Bluff

The Brook and The Bluff

The Brook and The Bluff

Some things in this world exist without any evidence and without anyone taking notice. Feelings of ambiguity, turmoil and loneliness are mostly invisible but as real as any place. So let’s imagine such a place where you are free from those things. Let’s imagine a place that feels like home. Not the home you knew as a child, but a new home, the place where you’re supposed to be. You are at peace in this place. It’s so tangible that you can describe it. It’s in the woods, among the trees, far from the noise out there. It’s between a brook, whose waters carry sounds like soul from Muscle Shoals, and a bluff, whose echoes carry the applause of dancing leaves. This is the place in which you are called to come and play. This is where you belong.

Such a place exists for Mountain Brook’s Alec Bolton and Bluff Park’s Joe Settine. The acoustic neo-soul duo, The Brook and the Bluff, has found a home in music since returning to Birmingham after graduating from college in 2015. They first collaborated musically at Auburn University performing “songs you didn’t know you…

The Revivalists

The Revivalists

Mother Plug Music presents The Revivalists featuring special guest Patrick Sweany and Willie and the Giant, Friday, June 26, at Avondale Brewing Co. Get your tickets here!

The Revivalists. The formation of The Revivalists was all about chance, but everything since then has been a combination of hard work, awesome music, and friendship. The septet has been playing nonstop since 2007, crafting a genre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes the divergent backgrounds of its individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of the band’s New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with an exotic accent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down.

Religion aside, a revival is all about the tangible electricity that can only be created when enough like minds are crammed under a single roof for a singular purpose. It’s a spiritual spectacle, a carnival of the divine, a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The same could be said for The Revivalists’ searing live performances. The band has a knack for bringing music to life on a stage, and they have tuned their talents to Swiss-watch precision…
