On October 11, Mt. Joy and Trampled by Turtles brought their co-headlining tour to Avondale for a field full of passionate fans ready to enjoy the music on a cool fall night. Both bands are Avondale veterans, with Mt. Joy’s last appearance taking place in May when the venue was still imposing pod seating because of the pandemic.
Trampled by Turtles’ intensity is always surprising when you hear them play. You’d think a band with no drummer and a lot of bluegrass instruments would be a calmer occasion, but they sounded like thunder as they took the crowd on a trip through their entire discography. Fans of Mt. Joy (who played last on this evening) might not have known what they were getting into — but it’s impossible to not leave a TBT show unimpressed with their musicianship and might.
Mt. Joy took the stage right at 9 P.M., and it’s hard to understand just how beloved they are in the Magic City. This band has scaled up very quickly, with their first show coming in 2018 across the street at Saturn. Now after touring the world many times over, headlining esteemed venues like the Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Greek Theatre, they’ve become a can’t-miss live act. Whether you’re only familiar with the hits or if you’re a passionate fan (which, it felt like in Birmingham everyone knew every word to every single song), Matt Quinn and co. bring pristine energy to the stage that is sure to convert all listeners into the Mt. Joy fandom. Check out our photo gallery of the evening below, and grab tickets for the rest of the tour here.
