One of the most hotly-anticipated shows of the year rolled into Birmingham last week as Glass Animals finally took the stage at Avondale Brewing Company on their Dreamland tour. The British quartet has seen an insane rise in fame this year with their song “Heat Waves” eclipsing one billion streams and reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Simply put, this show was one of the biggest to hit Avondale in some time, with tickets selling out almost immediately months in advance and a crowd that wrapped around the block hours before the show started.
With the crowd packed in and the stage adorned with bright neon signs and a brilliant video game display on the venue’s incredible LED screen, Dave Bayley and the band came on stage to the title track of last year’s Dreamland, ushering in listeners to their style of woozy, intoxicating indie-pop. Their set was not limited to Dreamland or their hits — they played a lot of deep cuts from 2017’s How To Be A Human Being and an electrifying take on their Denzel Curry collaboration “Tokyo Drifting” that had the crowd going nuts. Bayley was in impressive form, strutting across the stage and feeding off of the crowd’s energy to put on one of the best sets of the burgeoning fall touring season.
